The Rotary Club of
Carmel-by-the-Sea Foundation
The mission of the Rotary Club of Carmel by the Sea Foundation, a California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation, is to raise funds to support youth programs, scholarship and other worthy charitable activities consistent with Rotary International 's mission and commitment to "Service Above Self."
FOUNDATION HISTORY
In November 2015, Rotary Club of Carmel-by-the-Sea then President Siobhan Greene assembled interested club members to discuss the current and future administration of Awards and Grants, and Scholarships. The events which precipitated this meeting were two major gifts to the Club to be held as a donor advised funds at the Community Foundation for Monterey County. One was from Richard LaSalle, a former club member and accomplished musician, who bequeathed almost the entirety of his estate to Rotary Club of Carmel-by-the-Sea. The other was from former member Fred Stanley.
As a result of that November meeting, an Ad Hoc committee was formed to make recommendations regarding the establishment of a separate 501c3 Club Foundation.
GOVERNANCE
The Rotary Club of Carmel-by-the-Sea Foundation, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, was formally established in 2018. The Rotary Club of Carmel-by-the-Sea Foundation Board (hereafter Club Foundation) is a separate board from the Rotary Club of Carmel-by-the-Sea's Board (hereafter Club Board) and has its own Bylaws, governing practices, and processes. The Club Foundation works to advance the mission, vision, and values of Rotary Club of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
IMPACT/PURPOSE
Providing scholarships to local students has long been a commitment of Rotary Club of Carmel-by-the-Sea and the formation of the Club Foundation enhances this tradition significantly. In addition to supporting charitable organizations and our Rotary Club’s community outreach and engagement programs, the Club Foundation’s bylaws allows it to be nimbler and more responsive to support individuals, families, or community groups directly when experiencing hardship or crisis situations.
VEHICLE FOR CLUB-FOCUSED DONATIONS
Members who wish to support the Rotary Club can do so with charitable donation to the Club Foundation which is a 501c3.
TYPES OF GIFTS
In addition to direct cash contributions, bequests from trusts and estates or gifts from IRAs can be made to the Club Foundation. Ongoing contributions from club members helps to build the corpus of funds allowing the Club Foundation to have greater impact and sustainability.
MATCHING GRANTS FROM ROTARY INTERNATIONAL AND OTHERS
The Club Foundation can seek matching grants from Rotary International. Matching grants for approved projects from Rotary International can be given to the Club directly to be used as restricted funds for the operational costs of that project.
